Bildsten Architecture and Planning has a singular vision:
To imagine, design, and build complete environments that contribute to the community.
We take a multidisciplinary approach to all our projects.
Upon founding the firm in 2014, Ellen encouraged long-time friends and colleagues Windward Engineering and the Santa Barbara Contractors Association to join in finding a building to share for collaborative studio space. They found and renovated a small office building in the industrial part of town, reserving the central area for shared kitchen, bathrooms and conference area. Weekly potluck lunch in the shared kitchen keeps everyone in good communication and sharing ideas with one another.
One August evening in 2014 after the ending of her partnership firm and the ensuing shuttling of furniture and documents to the new studio building, Ellen - together with her family - discovered Telegraph Brewery just down the industrial alley from the new space. In the glow of the moment, and with well-deserved beer and food truck tacos in hand, a weekly architect’s meetup was born. To this day, every Friday after work, Ellen and friends and colleagues gather to support the local scene, celebrate another great week, and exchange experiences and ideas.
VISION & APPROACH
Ellen Bildsten, Architect AIA is actively involved in building community. She and her architecture team are committed to improving Santa Barbara through thoughtful planning and architecture. If you find these ideas and visions for Santa Barbara interesting and want to know more specifics about the opportunities to design and construct projects that contribute, please get in touch. Together we can make a positive difference in our community! If you’re thinking about a construction or renovation project in the Santa Barbara area, talk to a local Architect. We are familiar with the many local building codes, design review requirements, structural and energy considerations that will streamline the design and permitting process of your project. Getting these correct from the start will save significant time and expense during construction. A well-designed, permitted building which maximizes real estate investment will be the result.
With its natural beauty, temperate climate and limited geographic size, Santa Barbara is well suited to support a carbon neutral lifestyle. Residents of all ages who bike or walk to daily destinations tend to have strong connections to their neighborhood and community. Studies have shown that this kind of lifestyle contributes to overall happiness and health. In order to build this kind of sustainable community, there must be a vital combination of housing, workplaces, schools and shops within walking distance of one another, an essential combination for us to achieve in Santa Barbara.
Our concept of a vibrant architecture practice involves collaboration with related fields of design and construction.
Together with our friends at Santa Barbara Contractors Association and Windward Engineering, we located a building in the up-and-coming industrial part of Santa Barbara. Renovations to modernize and open the space to air and light have yielded a creative, collaborative dynamic among all of us in the building.
