Davidson Library Renovation

The center of UCSB campus has been filled with the buzz of construction as Davidson Library undergoes its latest, and largest, renovation and expansion project.  Here at Bildsten Architecture and Planning, we have observed the project unfold while designing the Writing Studio, which will be located at the eastern end of the library complex.  We helped organize and attended a behind the scenes Hard Hat tour of the library construction last Tuesday.  Donning hardhats and reflective vests, we joined around 20 of our AIA (American Institute of Architects) colleagues at the construction site.  Exposed metal beams, unfinished walls, and air ducts were just some of what we saw on our tour, which was led by Steven Hall, construction administration architect of Pfeiffer Partners in LA and Marc Fisher, Associate Vice Chancellor for UCSB Campus Design and Facilities.

When completed, the project will include:

  • A three-story building addition on the north side of the Library to include faculty and student collaboration spaces and Special Collections

  • A complete renovation and seismic retrofit of the original two-story building to house the Arts Library, plus additional study and gathering spaces

  • A newly built Paseo, or grand walkway, which connects all parts of the Library as well as campus

  • A seismic retrofit of the eight-story tower and life-safety upgrades throughout

The project is expected to be completed by December 2015 - we can't wait!
